FAQ
Process in commissioning my artistic services:

Step One: I visit your site to take measurements and discuss various ideas. I ask a series of questions to help us all visualize the key elements of the design, making rough sketches as we go. Children particularly enjoy participating in the design process for their rooms. I will prepare and email or fax a price quote to you within 72 hours from our meeting. There is no charge for this initial consultation. However, for a $40 fee I will make a scale black and white drawing of the design that will be sent to you along with the quote information.

Step Two: Accompanying the price quote is a service contract that protects both you and me. A non-refundable deposit of 1/3 to 1/2 the total is due upon scheduling the work days; which enables me, at no personal risk, to purchase the necessary materials or supplies to complete the job.

Step Three: I arrive to complete the agreed work, you enjoy the finished results. As a creative individual myself, I am open to suggestions, ideas, and minor changes, and I will likely offer ideas as well. Major changes, however, are subject to additional fees that are proportionate to the work they will entail.

*I ask that you clear the area to be painted from furniture or any other obstructions before my arrival.

  • Q: What sort of paint do you use, and is it toxic?
  • Q: How long does it take to paint a mural?
A: This question is relative to how much detail is involved with the design and how long it will take. A simple mural may take only a day or two. A complex mural painted on one wall can take on average between 3 to 5 days, and an average full room mural takes somewhere between 5 and 20 days to complete. More complex designs and larger rooms may take a little longer.

*As an artist, I am committed to doing my very best on every work. I generally pad the time I estimate to complete a job to account for my perfectionist nature. Most jobs run under schedule, but some may require a bit more time on the job. I guarantee that my attention to detail will be worth it.

Q: How Much Do Indoor Murals Cost?
A: Because of the numerous variables, this is an extremely difficult question to answer in general terms. As each mural is unique and custom tailored, so is its price. Generally, I charge by the square foot on a variable scale that takes into account the detail and complexity of the design: low, medium, or high detail. Also taken into account is whether or not any repair or prep of the walls is needed. As a basic rule of thumb a typical sized bedroom will equate to, on average, $500 a wall. The costs can range higher depending on size and the materials used.

Q: What is the cost of an outdoor wall mural?
A: The answer to this question is relative to the number of square feet to be painted, materials used, and complexity of the design. Exposure to the harsh Arizona climate and UV radiation requires extra steps when painting an outdoor mural. In order to guarantee a sufficient lifespan of the mural, protective materials are necessary. Some designs may require a conditioning primer. Block walls are on average built in 10’ long by 6’ high sections, or 60 square feet. Rates vary from $6 to $10 per square foot, roughly $360 to $600 per section. A minimum commission of one wall section is required. *Special graffiti resistant coatings that allow graffiti to be stripped off without harming the mural are available upon request at an additional cost.

Q: What is the cost of Faux Finishing and Textures?

A: Depending on the "finish" chosen and the amount of wall prep needed, the average faux finish is approx. $1.00 to $3.00 a square foot and a little more for specialty finishes, such as textures.

Q: I know that I definitely want a mural, but can only vaguely picture it well enough to describe.
A: Looking through pictures is the best way to crystallize your vision. Try looking through travel magazines, children’s books, vacation photos, internet image searches, and even scenes from movies for ideas. I have amassed and categorized a huge collection of pictures and designs in a binder that you can flip through to aid the design process. I can also freeze frame stills from movies and project and transfer them right onto the wall.

Q: What sort of paint do you use, and is it toxic?
A: I use a blend of non-toxic matt emulsion (latex) and acrylics. They are very durable, lightfast and washable (using warm soapy water and a soft sponge). If required, I will apply a coat of non-toxic acrylic based matte varnish or polyurethane for increased durability and easier cleaning.

When airbrushing I use a fast drying non-toxic water-based acrylic. I wear a particle filtration mask to protect myself from fine particles that are only a minor risk to me at such close proximity (1-3 feet) to the airbrush. I use a filtered evacuation fan to catch any overspray.
